I have been quite busy lately and made some significant changes and additions to my line of whistles. Some time ago a traveling musician came thru Ashland and played Celtic music at the Talent barn and asked me if I could make him a soprano D whistle with a heavier wall tube. He said he was a little rough on his whistles due to all the traveling. As a result of this request I have developed a new Session whistle which uses a wall thickness that is a bit more than twice as thick as I was previously using. The result is a very sturdy instrument that weighs about the same as a Copeland and has a very solid tone which I like enough to make it my standard Session whistle.

I have also recently developed a narrow bore soprano D that Gary Humphrey has reviewed in a recent thread. This instrument uses the thin wall brass tubing that I have been using in the past and plays a little quieter than the Session version. This new sweeter-toned version is wonderful for small sessions or solo play.

I have also added a Bb that uses the heavier wall brass tubing. One of my customers has stated that he thinks it’s my best work so far. I’ll have to admit I like the rich tonal quality, too, but he hasn’t played the new Session D yet! His is in the mail so we’ll see.

Last, but not least, I have reworked the voicing on my Narrow bore Low D to strengthen the low end and I like it so much I am recommending it as my Standard Bore Low D. It is much more forgiving to play compared to my original large bore and offers the speed necessary for Celtic repertoire. The tone is darker (hollower) than the previous version and the balance across the octaves is very even. Of course the upper octave plays much easier and with less breath due to the smaller bore. This instrument plays fairly loudly as a result of the design changes in the voicing.
