Tip Bucket 2.0 – Velcro a $5.00 bill to the edge so I don’t have to worry about it. Toss in a few blue LED light cubes to get attention.

I got the Freescale developer tools installed, now have it able to switch between 16 different scrolling messages, ranging from “THANK YOU” and “WELCOME TO THE OULD SOD” to “PLEASE USE YOUR INDOOR VOICE” and “WOULD YOU PLEASE SHUT THE **** UP!”
Now to hook up the on-board accelerometers so that when people toss money in the bucket it flashes a special message or makes a happy noise… Fun stuff.

The tip bucket circuit board has a 3-axis accelerometer and can detect a dollar bill or change being bounced off the panel into the bucket.
For the final version, I figured out how to handle scanning the LEDs and monitor the accelerometer at the same time at a high enough rate to detect the incoming dollar bill strikes, so I added an “attract mode” animation:
