So the mystery is resolved at last. He’s just a lonely comet who drifted towards the sun looking for a bit of tail.

If you’ve never seen a comet, this is your chance. I spotted it with my naked eyes even in our brightly lit neighborhood. With 7x50 binocs it was quite a pretty little fuzzy ball. Here’s a map of where to look:

The big “W” of Casseiopia is easy to spot, then just scan downwards.
