Come West Along The Road DVD

I was disappointed by this. They should’ve put out two discs, at least. The original video tape had a smidge of hokeyness but the DVD gives equal time to it - notice how most of the strummin’ balladers were taped in the 60s, doesn’t that suggest that no one is interested in them anymore? Too many sessions and ceili bands too. Even the Tulla. Make room for Josie McDermott or the like (I’ve seen footage!). What was that “bonus track” for? Really exciting watching Ciaran meet and greet.

When you think how much phenomenal programming RTÉ must have tucked away, it kinda makes me cringe at some of the choices made on the DVD. I thought the first volume, which is only available on tape, to have the better selection. That’s not to say there isn’t some great music on the DVD, just that there could have been a lot more so. What were they thinking?

Yep.

€€€…

I have always wondered how RTE, with so many celebrated musicians on the payroll, (and that’s their day jobs) could be so ignorant of what is great and glorious in the archives.

Roger is right…€€€…

Shameful but true.

Slan,

Yeah, but the presenters were hotties way back when (I think I was in high school)
Aside of that, I would hope they release the original VCR tape on DVD. Does anyone know what footage they have in the vaults??

Sigh

Tony MacMahons muse once…

??? the face escapes me

I’ve a few videos with all sorts of wonderful stuff, they did a doc on Josie M as I hinted at, the bit on the DVD with Paddy Glackin you’ll notice has Seamus Ennis in the audience, he played the Bucks on that show. “Are you ready, Seamus?” “Blowing up, now…” Etc. etc. Anyone you can imagine them sticking a camera in front of, there’s bound to be some footage.
I guess we’ll have to wait on it, like so much great music out there that’s not made it into stores yet.
Maybe I’ll remaster the DVD so all the Men Behind the Wire are at the end, can you do that?
Reading all this stuff over at Mudcat.com about Peter Kennedy I hope someday they figure out a more efficient way of getting royalties to people than checks in the mail. Link up a person to a product and every item that sells they get their 2p in the savings account.

CWAtR has gone through five full series now, there’s a lot of stuff broadcast that never went onto any DVD I reckon. It’s often a very mixed bag with the odd gem thrown in. It’s greatest entertainment value is in seeing p[eople you know, filmed very young with strange hair and jumpers. (been there done that, I was shown being interviewed by Tony McMahon in 1981 which caused great fun with people who recognised he voice behind the hair).
For the last series they widened the net, probably because there wasn’t enough stuff in the period of their original remit. RTE wiped an awful lot of stuf over the years.

Doireann ni Bhriain is her name.

Slan,

I hope they someday consider rereleasing the earlier volumes on DVD. For now we just have to hope that we catch the youtube stuff before it’s gone.

Yes, get it while you can. There’s TG4 stuff up there including the Margaret Barry program. If you have a Mac it’s easy to grad the video with the free program PodTube with also converts the video and places it into iTunes

Thanks for the reminder, I had a touch of Alzheimer’s. She was in UCD Arts in my time there, but I can’t really claim that “we go back a long way”.

Drifting back on topic, RTE had to be shamed into re-issuing the Mrs Crotty CD, which was in great demand.

Kevin , looking at that thing at the bottom of your post .

is it a flute with a serious amount of spit overflowing from the bore , and drifting down from the finger holes , and over the body of the instrument ?

Nothing so exotic, it’s from http://www.badmovies.org/
