cleaning / sanitizing whistles to sell or trade

I’m passing some of my whistles on to a nephew this Christmas, and was wondering: What’s the best way to clean the whistle to pass it on to a new owner, be it for selling or trading or whatever. What do you do to get it ready for a new owner? …

… assuming, of course, that any of us can ever bear to part with a whistle!

Thanks for your input!

If the whistle is not wood ( plastic, metal, etc) a MILD bleach solution will work very well. Rinse well afterwards. As you may gather from my name, I am a homebrewer, and this is what we use to sterilize fermenters, bottles, etc prior to using them. Not sure the best thing to tell you for wooden whistles-- guess you’ll just have to keep those…

At just about any music store you can get a disinfectant spray; I forget the name. There are probably several different brands. Anyway, it’s safe for wood, and it’s made specifically to sanitize wind instruments. Good luck.

Hey Tom,

Does that it make smell like bowling shoes?

 Erik

Erik,

No…unless bowling shoes smell “fresh and minty.”
