Clare music

I’ve just read an article which Peter mentioned almost in a throwaway manner on the “transcription updates” thread.

It’s about Junior Crehan, but also gives a lot of very interesting and well-expressed background about the social climate in which Junior played.

It’s well worth a read (the smell of the turf smoke wafts all the way to Brussels, but even the prevailing winds won’t stop it from heading westwards across the Atlantic too). I’m putting it up here again in a separate thread because it would be a pity if people overlooked it. You’ll find it here: http://www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/crehan.htm

Please note the article is over ten years old so some of the situations described don’t actually exist anymore. ‘Dad’s Army’ or the stiff six as they were sometimes called [or more unfriendly ‘the six stiffs’]are nearly all gone. The two surviving members don’t come out on the sundaynight anymore. The music is carried on in their spirit though. I am a member of the present ‘band’ who plays for the dancers on the sundaynights, Barry Taylor, who wrote the article, sits in occasionally too.

Peter,

Do you have any other sets of pipes other than Mr. Wooff’s C-set? Along with that question, when you do sit in on the band, what set do you use?

Thanks.

Jonathan Hohl

I play whistle, that suits a lot better. The pipes do come out when Kitty Hayes and myself do a duet spot of our own every week so the rest of the band can take a trip to the jacks or whatever.

Pardon my nosiness, Peter, but do you have another set of pipes?

And do you know if . . . well, I’ll post this question on the uilleann pipes board.
