Clare 2-piece / Doolin 2-piece

Someone asked about comparing these 2 whistles a short while back. I’ve been playing both for several days now. Out of the box (so to speak – these were used), I found I kept putting the Doolin down and picking up the Clare. I didn’t like the sound of the Doolin – very airy lows, and the higher octave was very hard to hit. I didn’t love the Clare either, but I was looking for travel whistles, so I figured these would do.

Yesterday I read a post about someone putting an Oak head on a Feadog, so when I was messing with the 2-pieces earlier today, I pulled out a few whistles and started trying different fipples on the Doolin. With the Oak fipple, it sounds and plays great! The fipple is a tiny bit too big, so I have to go find some pipe tape, but the Doolin just shot past the Clare and several of my 1-piece whistles, too. Best of all, I’ll now have a pocket whistle I really like!

So if you have a Doolin 2-piece you don’t like, try another fipple on it. You might be surprised!
