Christmas list help

What cd’s would you recommend for a Christmas list?

Thanks!

There,s got to be one in every Christmas stocking.

Do you mean ITM or uilleann pipes Christmas albums ?

Eric Rigler put out a CD of Christmas music on uilleann pipes but I don’t know where you’d get it. Alternatively, the Chieftains released the Bells of Dublin which is your typical Chieftain’s album with ITM mixed with just about everything you can think of.

Actually, I’ve got to get my family a Christmas list… a list of things I’d like to receive for Christmas. I’m pretty sure that the jet and that round-the-world cruise are both beyond the realm of possibility, so I thought that some good pipng cds might work. After Rory’s suggestion, however, i’m thinking that I might head out to the greater Midwest yodelfest instead.

Seriously, some piping CD recommendations would be most welcome.

Not uilleann pipes or even trad at all … But if you’re a fan of acapella groups with tight harmonies and innovative pop-influenced arrangements, the two Christmas albums by The Pentatonix - one last year, one just released - are excellent Christmas fare by some very talented and deserving young musicians.

Yep, they’re great! I’ve been a fan since I first heard them about a year and a half ago. Their version of “Mary Did You Know” is outstanding. I’m readily looking for some good non-Christmas UP CDs, though. Any suggestions?

Sure, it’s a matter of personal taste and which pipers you like. Styles can vary quite a bit. But since you asked, here are some of my favorites:

“Reed Only”, Brian McNamara and Tim Collins
“Fort of the Jewels”, Brian McNamara
“Deadly Buzz Aoibhinn Crónán”, Mick O’Brien & Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh
“Kitty Lie Over”, Mick O’Brien & Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh
“Tunes from the Goodman Manuscripts”, Mick O’Brien, Emer Mayock, Aoife Ni Bhriain
“Take Me Tender”, Jimmy O’Brien Moran
“The Eighteen Moloney”, David Power
“Swimming Against the Falls”, Joey Abarta
“Well Below the Valley”, Planxty
Anything by Seamus Ennis, Willie Clancy, Leo Rowsome, or Tommy Reck

Anything by Paddy Keenan or Liam O’Flynn. Johnny Doran, Leo Rowsome, Willie Clancy, and Seamus Ennis would also make nice additions to any uilleann pipe CD collection.

I tend not to prefer albums with accompaniment, I’ve been really enjoying Sean McKeon’s “To the City”. And again, I tend to hate the old timey piano accompaniments, but I’ve surprised myself with how much I love the Cormac Cannon album with Lamond Gillespie and John Blake - “The Trip to Carrick”.

I heard NPU is pushing for a solo album from Cormac. I really hope it gets done. I’ve really enjoyed listening to his stuff on NPU’s site.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Christmas list is finished, and has been handed out. If I’m lucky, I’ll get one or two new cd’s along withe obligatory socks, new tie, etc.

Socks! Tie!! Oh boy!!!

Yeah, I’m awaiting the blessed day with thinly veiled excitement for sure.

I’m hoping for a Eugene Lambe 1/2 set.

That would be nice.

I think it’s called “A Celtic Christmas” and I saw it on Itunes. Not absolutely sure though.
