You’re right, for sure but I was just wondering about the mechanism of Cnat thumbholes. Actually, what I’m trying to ask is what is the effect on the rest of the scale?
I am. I have tried an Abell with thumbhole, and found it considerably more difficult to play than a regular-holed whistle.

Jens, I thought it was a Fnat hole…the one wee hole behind between E and D, right? To me it looked really like a Fnat, as seen on Modal D/C Overton.

I have some whistles with C natural thumb holes, and I love them. IMHO, it drastically improves the sound of C nat, and actually helps the whole scale. It also allows for slides from B to C natural. It improves dexterity when fingering between B & C.
Of course, if you don’t want all these benefits, you can simple keep your thumb in place, where it ought to be anyway.

Definitely C natural holes. Chris started adding them at the request of Noel Rice of Offaly and Chicago. Noel has many students with Abells and the C nat hole.
Don’t bring them to a Comhaltas competition. When Noel’s students showed up competing at the All-Ireland with a C nat Abell Whistle, they limited the tin whistle to 6 holes.
One benefit of them is staccato or tongued triplets with C nat in there. Harder to do with the standard C nat cross fingering.

Zoob, Spam is processed ham-like pink meat that comes in a can. It has been made fun of for decades.
It’s because Kevin L. Rietmann said you should use some kind of flesh instead of tape, to close the holes. The stuff they sell with the bread at McDonalds should do nicely too.
It would be good place to put your old chewing gum.
