Choosing the Right NEMA 23 Stepper Motor

I’m planning to use a NEMA 23 stepper motor for a small CNC machine and would like some practical advice before buying. The motor will mainly drive a lead screw, so I’m more concerned about torque at higher speeds than maximum holding torque. I’m currently comparing several 2-phase models with different current and inductance ratings. How important is the inductance when selecting a motor for CNC applications? Also, would you recommend a 24 V or 48 V power supply for better performance at higher RPM? Any real-world experience with NEMA 23 motors would be appreciated.

You want to match the motor to the controller. Gecko makes some nice controllers, if you don’t have one already. Look at the controller documentation for info on inductance etc. 48V will give more torque, but it will also make the motor run hotter…
