Chocolate Hangover ~ (newbie)

Hey all! Well, after lurking around these parts for awhile I have finally decided to take the plunge and join the family! This may help alleviate the post-Easter blues that I’m experiencing after a night of plundering the kid’s Easter baskets for chocolates and jelly beans!
My experience with whistles is fairly recent, brought on by a wrist injury that prohibits my playing the flute for awhile. I was seriously missing my music, and computer surfing one day brought me to this site. Brainstorm!! Something light, tuneful, not played in a transverse position ~ hey, I can do that! And then I can still play all those tunes that I downloaded from Ceolas website! A trip to the local music shop yielded a good selection which I brought home and shared with my boys. Two Generations, a Walton’s D, a Feadog, a Clark’s Original, and a Sweetone.
The oldest son shared his disapproval of “those squeaky things” and expressed his joy at his emminent departure for college. The next son picked one up, played 2 notes, and went back to his computer. Ah, but my 2 youngest sons! We swooped with glee upon the offerings, playing and discarding, until each of us had found our favorite! For Ryan it was the Feadog, Jon chose the Clark’s Original, and my pick was the Sweetone. Now we’re happily tooting away, and I have a couple Dixon’s and a Silkstone alloy D on the way. Can’t wait!
It’s been fun and informative to read the messages, and I look forward to learning more about whistles and those of you who play them. Kind of makes me forget about the fact that we’re so far from home…
Just one question ~ where do you find those cute little smiley faces that show up from time to time in your posts? L

Hi, Mary. Welcome to the board. Nice to have you. Sorry to disappoint you about the smilies, you can only get those if you have posted at least 100 messages (see the little post count under your handle?). They’re not newbie-compatible. But you’ll get there!

 Best,

You can ignore Bloomfield, we all do. Go to http://chiffboard.mati.ca/faq.php#smilies to see what you are supposed to write in your posts to translate into a smiley.

MMMMMMMM…chocolate. Chocolate sure doesn’t last long at our house! I think we have some jelly beans left. Even more smilies can be had from this site: [Smile!

By the way, have you had a chance to ponder the perils and pleasures of WhOA yet? (See the Chiff & Fipple Department of Mental Health for more information)

I think Mary already has a case of WhOA!

(Is that a pennywhistle in yer pocket or are ya glad to see me?)

I think Bloomfield looked at the calendar…

I’d welcome you, but I’m not sure if a lurker is allowed to welcome…

You’re s/n caught my eye by being similar to my own. And it’s great that you have at least one other family member who is/will be a whistle-crazy companion – lone whistling is, well, lonely!

Well, hey… Nice to hear from you all! I might have been back sooner, but I’ve been mesmerized by all the little bouncin green smiley’s on Sunnywindo’s post…
Yes, I’m afraid that all those well-intended warnings about the dangers of WhOA have come a little too late to save me. I felt myself slipping out of control on my very first whistle buying spree. It’s been all downhill since then, ESPECIALLY with income tax refund on the horizon…
You’re right, DixieWhistler, it is nice to have a couple of my sons playing too. It is really amazing how easily they have taken to it. So far today I have heard renderings of everything from Peer Gynt’s “Hall of the Mountain King” (badly) to “There’s a Place in France Where the Ladies…” well, you know that one. NOT traditional music, to say the least, but boy, they’re having a great time.
BTW, we’re formerly from Savannah, now exiled up here in the Pacific Northwest. (But it’s pretty here!) Good to hear from some fellow Southerners.
(Roll Tide!)

The cool thing about whistles is you cannot each chocolate and play at the same time.

From one addict to another… I’d rather be a whistle addict.

Chocolate may be cheaper…

But, whistles no cal., and fat burners… unfortunatly, $$$ burners as well.

Welcome. Now, get back to that store and pick up a whistle or six in the key of C so you can whistle your namesake (“Dixie” is fairly easy and very pretty on the whistle, and the traditional key is the key of C.)

John: Dude, you read my mind!! I was on my way out the door but thought I’d read a few messages first!

BINGO!

“Chocolate Hangover” is a good name for a tune.

I’m also kind of new to the board to be welcoming you, but it’s nice to hear of a new whistler in the region. So, welcome. I have four kids too, and they all pick up my whistles now and again, but none have shown any real enthusiasm yet. But I’m still hoping. My son encountered a bodhran this weekend - is that good or bad?

Good point. Whistles are a lot healthier for the body than chocolate. But when my husband finds the chocolate I bought he just asks for a share; when he finds out about the new whistle I ordered he gives me “that look”.

Sounds like you are having way too much fun! So where do you plan on storing all of your wonderful whistles? In a case, in a vase… or perhaps a whole new room… Income tax refund, now that’s a really good idea!
