I’d like to create, with your input, a list of top whistle CDs (BY THE READERS & EDITORS OF CHIFF & FIPPLE !!). I have in mind a simple way to do it. Each of you post your favorites, in no particular order. You can submit as few as one and as many as several thousand. Whatever. I’ll simply tally the number of times a given CD is mentioned. The one mentioned most is #1 and so on down to #5 or 10 or 15 or whatever makes the most sense statistically. To be eligible, the CD most prominently feature the whistle, although it need not be the primary instrument.
Tied for second place:
Joanie Madden: Song of the Irish Whistle
Joanie Madden: Song of the Irish Whistle 2
Mary Bergin: Fedoga Stain
Mary Bergin: Fedoga Stain 2
A close third:
Paddy Maloney and Sean Potts: Tinwhistles
(2 whistle players really can play in unison)
Since Joannie Madden is my champion, I have to go along with JessieK.
Not rcving any email so just want to tell Neil Dickey I got to the lagoon 15 min late today…I understand why you weren’t there…oh those stinkin’ fish! Gm
As well as Song of the Irish Whistle I & II and Feadoga Stain I & II which of course belong on any top 10 whistle list, I’d like to mention one CD that doesn’t seem to be well known but contains some absolutely great traditional whistle playing. The player is Colm O’Donnell and the CD is “Farewell to Evening Dances”. Colm also sings traditional songs in Irish and English, does lilting and plays the flute. Two of my favorites whistle tunes from the CD are “The Dublin Reel” and “The Maid of Mount Cisco”. The difficult second reel is beautifully played and is also a master class in every aspect of whistle playing especially rolls, cuts, slides, breath control, and variations. The sad thing is that so few people seem to have heard of this great musician.
The Irish Low Whistle- Joe McKenna

Joanie Madden - Song of the Irish Whistle 1
Joanie Madden - Whistle on the Wind
The Chieftains - An Irish Evening
Seamus Egan - Traditional Music of Ireland
Flook - Flatfish
Perhaps there should be seperate top10 ten lists for high and low whistles? Seems to me most folks here (C&F) have a definite preference for one or the other and it’s really starting to show in this thread. I’m thinking seperate high and low lists would help steer those thinking of making purchases to what they are looking for.
Anyway, here are some of my top 10 (and no, I’m not copying Brigitte’s list!):
Flook - Flatfish
Lunasa - Otherworld + Merry Sisters of Fate
Solas - all of 'em!
Seamus Egan - When Juniper sleeps
Eamonn Dillon - Storm The Kettle
Cormac Breatnach - Musical Journey
Afro Celt Soundsystem - Vols. 2 & 3
James McNally - Everybreath
Eoin Duignan - Ancient Rite + Coumineol
Hevia - Tierra De Nadie
Brian Finnegan - When the party’s over
Laurence Nugent - Two for two + Windy gap, but mostly for the flute on those CD’s
There’s more of course, but those are some of my faves. I
Loren
