Chiff and Fipple SF Bay Area Winter get-together: March 19

To fill in the long gap between the Fall and Spring gatherings Tony Higgins hosts, and shorten the drive for those of us in the southern reaches of the San Francisco bay area, the Bay Area Winter Chiff & Fipple get-together will be Saturday, March March 19, 2005

We’ve got a reasonably large amount of space to spread out, and (if warm and dry) a decent sized patio we can use. Bring something for the pot luck if you can, don’t sweat it if you can’t - we’d like your company. I’ll set up the BBQ for those who want to grill something. And if it’s a clear night I’ll set up one of my telescopes on the patio for the folks who want to take a look.

Judging by the response I’ve been getting offline, it looks like we’ll have a good turnout. But the more the merrier - please come if you can. I’m looking forward to meeting old friends and making ones.

Bring your whistles and other instruments - I promise to drop out once the musical level gets above my head :laughing:

Start time for the early birds is 1-2 PM. Judging by previous gatherings, this means that slightly more than half the folks will be there by 3 PM or so, with the rest trickling in by early evening. :laughing:

Don’t sweat it too much - come when you can. Depending on folk’s energy level, we’ll plan on wrapping up somewhere between 9 PM and bar closing time.

Those who collapse will be neatly stacked in the spare bedroom. I’m told that “Early One Morning” on a high D whistle is excruciating when you’ve got a hangover - you have been warned. :smiling_imp:

I’ll bring the vegetarian seven-layer dip again. That seemed to go over well at the last gathering.

Regarding the dip, I think you meant “everyone dug in like it was going out of style” :laughing:

We’ll probably do an assortment of finger food (some vegetarian, some not). We have two ovens, a toaster oven, and a microwave available for warming/browning things, as well as a gas BBQ grill.

I’ve also laid in a bottle of Poteen to fuel the traditional late-evening rendition of “It’s All For My Grog”. :smiley:

And as much as I love to sing, about the most you could say for my voice is “well, it’s not as bad as it could be.” :smiling_imp:

An addendum I felt advisable: judging by the discussions elsewhere on the board, C & F members hold very diverse, and often opposed, political and religious opinions. Free admission: I am certainly not one of the most self-effacing board members in this regard.

I regard you all as friends, and I hope everyone who reads this feels welcome in my home - and by this I explicitly include those of you who I’ve been most heatedly debating.

To keep the focus where it should be - our love of music and the often-zany C & F community - I’d like to declare a moratorium on political debates for the day. If you want to argue The Chieftains vs pure-drop music, or R & R vs Pratten style flutes, or Copeland vs Overton whistles, be my guest. :smiley:

(In regards to the last sentence: a) I like both. b) R & R, by a hair, and C) Overton.) :party:

Hmmm, what about Ear vs Sheet music debates? those can get pretty heated. :wink:

We’ve never had a problem with politics being discussed at these parties and I doubt they will start now.

You’re probably right. But I still hope we can avoid the gory Who’s the Best Traditional Musician Alive Today debate - especially when folks start using low whistles as shillelaghs. Shudder. :cry:

The only waves I remember at whistle party is when Stout starts in on guitarists, accordions, neo-trad players, etc etc. But the music drowns 'im out as Limu flails on his Tahitian backwards uke.

Set it in stone: No politricks at the wheestle parties. Hope I can make it.

I hope it won’t come down to me having to resort to that. My Chieftain low E is pretty thick and could do some damage :smiling_imp: No, I’m really looking foward to seeing some of you guys again and others for the first time. I’d be in favor of the certain topics moratorium. But Justine and I can debate about pipes freely. :smiley:

You’ve never hefted my Serpent Low F, have you? A true Whistle of Mass Destruction (and sounds pretty good too, once it’s warmed up). :smiley:

I’m crying over my unstable reed again, so I think my opinion of pipes might be a bit negative right now. :imp: Hoping to get the borrowed chanter up and running to my satisfaction soon.

Hope you get a chanter working Justine, it’d be grand to play with another piper. My new reed that John made for me at the tionol is sounding great except that the bottom D needs to be cut in or else it sqeaks. :sniffle:
