I didn’t start this topic to be an actual Chieftain v. Overton debate/riot but I just thought some would find it ironic.
I was recording some Lunasa CDs onto tape so I could listen to them in my car (my car is from the '80s so bear with me). I was looking at the liner notes of “Merry Sisters of Fate” to see who played who’s whistles. I noticed that Sean Smyth plays Overton low whistles and that Cillian Vallely plays Chieftain low whistles. What’s more is that they play them together on the same track.
Now if there were some kind of vengeful whistle god they wouldn’t have let this happen (I’m being fecetious here). Kind of like if you poured Coke into a glass that said Pepsi the glass would shatter or the Coke would just be diverted in mid-air and spill onto the table.
So either there are no vengeful whistle gods (sad to think, I know) or cosmic peace does exist between the two whistles. ![]()

No, no, no, say it ain’t so!!! It just can’t be!
Aaron, many portable CD players have an adaptor/device that allows you to connect a CD thru your cassette slot. Then you won’t have to bother downloading to tape. Haven’t you considered this?
Bizarre, because Sean Smyth usually plays Kerry Pro or Grinter.
On the CDs both Sean and Kevin play Grinter low Fs. On “The Merry Sisters of Fate” Sean is cited as playing a low Bb by Colin Goldie but on some tracks it says that he plays just “low whistle” so maybe that’s a Kerry Pro. I wonder what kind of gratuities the band got for advertising their instruments’ makers…
I have considered the adapter but I don’t have a portable CD player. Also I don’t like too much clutter in my car. Plus I enjoy making tapes. I’ll be getting a CD burner soon so maybe that will change my mind.
Cheers,
Aaron

Brilliant!
How about like an infinite regression of Ford Calvins pissing on Chevy Calvins pissing on Ford Calvins–or at least as many as will fit on the rear window…

Anybody seen the (fairly) recent dodge ads where Calvin’s getting ready to piss on the Ram and the Ram chases him off? Almost as good as when Jack in the Box turned the tables on the Taco Belle chiw… chijua… oh, that darned little dog.

Hmmm…that never entered my mind. I just figured they got sick of C&F’ers asking what whistles they were playing. ![]()

Sometimes they get a free whistle or two, or maybe just a discount on instruments, but not often… that’s about it. No money involved.

I would give just about anything to be able to have just one more Jack in the Box Ultimate Cheeseburger… Or one of their Grilled Swiss Mushrooom Melts…

who can’t believe Atlanta doesn’t have a Jack In The Box… and no, Carl’s Jr just isn’t the same. ::sigh::
Hey Folks,
These comments aren’t directed to any individual but are meant as a general observation.
It has been mentioned on the board about the sadness of various divisions that detract from unity and music (e.g. Irish Protestants vs. Catholics, etc.) and here we are indirectly endorsing sides in whistle maker against whistle maker broo-ha-ha. I have yet to hear from either Colin or Phil about this animosity, if it really exists at all.
Overton makes fine whistles. I own models made both by Colin and Bernard. Chieftain also makes fine whistles, I have excellant high & low Ds. So why continue to look for these “us-vs-them” distinctions.
If you prefer Overtons, that’s great. If you like Chieftains, good for you. If 2 artists choose to make music using both, so what??
Aren’t there enough divisions to overcome in the world to not add another?

Vinny,
Um, that is what I took to be Aaron’s original point…between the lines of exaggeration and irony…a mockery rather than a perpetuation of the “debate.”
Or are you kidding too? It’s hard to tell sometimes in this place…

Amen to that!
