I’m currently bidding on an Asurkar whistle on ebay, but, in the likely case I lose it… which of these makes would you suggest? I’m completely and utterly new to low whistles, though I’ve been playing a Clarke D for awhile. I’ve got it narrowed down to a Jubilee PVC low D, Asurkar, or a cane whistle.
Oh look, I haven’t tried one of his PVC lows, but on the basis of Daniel’s modal high whistles I’d say get Jubilee for sure. I’ve been meaning to get one of his Ahava Raba low Ds for a while—I’m a bit short of cash right now—but I’ll have no hesitation in buying one.
Daniel’s a lovely guy and great to deal with.
OK, next question please … ![]()
I started with a Susato low D, which I still play at gigs quite a bit even though I have a Copeland now. Hard to beat $28 for that Jubilee PVC though, wow.
I have an asukar Low D that I will sell for $ 45.00
It is a good beginning low D.
I now have a copeland low D.

I have the jubilee low whistle. It is a great buy for $20.00. I decided to buy it to see if I wanted to play a low D. I am no longer that interested in playing low D.

I have a Jubilee Low G. You need to work it to get a clear 2nd register, but it’s easy once you adjust. I do like it enough that I am about to buy a low C. Once you have an entire whistle, additional key bodies are around $40.00. Good low whistle for hacking around as I do.

Vote by me for the Jubilee PVC. I like it better than Jubilee metal… I could never get over the heft, the thin walls (leading to sharp lazy-man’s c-nat and hard to seal holes for people with un-pudgy fingers), and the push it needs to shriek up into the second octave.
The PVC practice, on the other hand, is gentle, easy-blowing (although a titch lung-depleting up high), lighter, and lots easier to seal the holes on. If I was being robbed and needed a weapon, I’d by using the metal one as a club to protect the pvc one.
It’s not a bad whistle, and I often find myself belting out a quick Kilgarry Mountain on it, but wow. Get the PVC one, color on it with a sharpie, and you will not regret it.
P.S. My strong vote of confidence is in the second verson of the practice whistle and I have not tried the third incarnation…
yet.
