Has anyone ever bought or played one of the cheap brass or nickel low D’s that are Always listed on ebay? There are usually like 6-12 listings for them at any given time, and generally say something like “Irish low D whistle nickel…” etc. and go for around $45.00. They’re probably made in pakistan or something but I was just curious.
I have one. They’re not great. Tommy once posted that he could fix
it using some sort of metallurgical alchemy, but I never got around
to having him try it. The holes are pretty much all the same size,
which makes them awkwardly spaced, and gives some notes a tone
different from the others.
I also have a Jubilee PVC practice low D, and I like it better. It’s
cheaper, to boot.

What he said!
Closing on 4 years ago now, I bought an Indian-made Sarkar from an eBayer. It was my first venture into low whistling, so from that standpoint, it was a good place and price to start.
The air requirement was huge as you could drive a drive through the windway, and the metallic taste from the brass/nickel was horrible.
That being said, the tone wasn’t too bad; no worse than a Susato low D. But there are better inexpensive low Ds for a newcomer.
EDIT: If any Chiffers are interested, send me $7.00 for postage anywhere in the continental US, and I’ll give you a free low D.
I have one. Mine plays in tune but is very soft - you could never play it at a session. It’s a bit of a stretch for the hands but not too bad for me - could be a problem if you have smallish hands.
I like to play mine out back on summer evenings…
