Yes, if there is no one there, nothing happens! You get a blank page. If people are chatting, though, the screen will fill with chat.
If you see that someone is there, but nothing happens, it may be that they are not at their computer. Apparently, they sign in and wander off while waiting for someone to show up. If you say hello, they’ll see you there eventually.
For a year, I thought that I was just doing something wrong!
Oh, and I have noticed that it helps to have web accelerator programs, popup blockers, and such disabled while chatting.
