Hello, I’m wondering if it’s considered poor form to ask your chanter’s maker for the reed and staple measurements he uses so I can make my own (or at least try to).

I don’t think so.. I’d think your pipemaker should encourage you to make your own reeds…
I don’t see why not. If I were a pipemaker, I’d be delighted to have my clients learn how to make their own reeds… less time for me to spend hunched over a shooting block… although, in all honesty, I love making reeds. But then I have always lived on the fringe of polite society… er, so to speak. 
that’s what I thought, about the extra workload and all, but then I figured @ $75-$85 a pop, it’s might be tacky like asking your favorite restaurant how to make your favorite dish at home so you don’t have to order it there anymore.
just wanted to be sure I wasn’t going to be insulting the man before I email him.

BC speaks Urdu?
What’s so funny about BC speaking Urdu? It’s one of the most widely spoken languages on the planet. (As Hindustani/Hindi/Urdu, that is.)
Nothing funny about speaking the language, but trying to get reed dimensions from a Pakistani pipe maker (or Mid East Instrument company) is.
If I recall correctly, Antaine has (some) pipes of Pakistani origin.
He does, and I believe he has (or had) a Bruce Childress chanter as well.
you’re all right on all counts…the whole thing is pakistani except the chanter, which is a childress. he was great and gave me all the measurements. (the urdu thing was funny tho)
once upon a time i tried taking my own measurements withtout disassembling my reeds…needless to say, i didn’t get anything capable of making sound. hopefully now I’ll get somewhere.
