chanter foot (tenon) dimensions

Hi all, new poster here. I’m doing a project connected to the pastorals and was wondering if any kind folks could provide me with the dimensions of their chanter foot (the brass covered tenon at the bottom of the chanter), plus the maker of said chanter. Measurements taken with calipers would be great, or mm second best, but I’ll be happy with anything. Repeats of makers are fine, because we all know they often make changes from one instrument to the next.

So far I have:

Childress (1999): .987’’ long, .752" outside diameter, .485" inside diameter
Gallager (2001): 1.02 L, .748 OD, .520 ID
O’Grady: .820 L, .754 OD, .485 ID
Dixon: .905 L, .751 OD, .476 ID
Daye Penny-chanter: 1.157 L, .625 OD, .533 ID

Even disregarding the Daye chanter (which is very different) there is more variation here than I would have thought.

Many thanks in advance.

I think you mean Uilleann Chanters as Pastoral chanters are quite different and do have a foot joint that looks to be around 150mm long

My own chanter by Chris Bayley made in 2000 has a bottom ferrule 31mm long and 19mm diameter fixed with hemp and not glued in place

If you should mean Pastoral Pipes really: The researchererers say that when you take off the Pastoral´s footjoint you get a narrow bore Union Pipe chanter (~Eb). So, CP Uilleann Pipe measurements mightn´t help you too much.

Sorry for the confusion. I am indeed looking for the dimensions of the foot/tenon on Uilleann chanters. This relates to some research I’m doing on pastoral chanters. The two are connected.

OK, I’ll try this again. Maybe my original post was unclear.

I’m trying to compare dimensions of the bottom tenons of different makes of UILLEANN chanters (the brass covered section at the bottom end of the chanter). I called this the ‘foot’ of the chanter, which might be confusing. I’m looking for anyone to provide me with:

  1. the length of the bottom tenon on their chanter, from the very bottom end up to the ferrule (turned ivory/bone section) and
  2. the outside diameter of the tenon (including the brass).

If anyone wants to also provide the inside diameter at the bottom end of the chanter (the bore), I would be interested in that too, but the other two dimensions are the most important. Measurements with calipers in thousandths of an inch are much appreciated, but I’ll be glad for any type of numbers people can give me.

Many thanks in advance,

H

Both concert D chanters.

Andreas Rogge:

L = 0.63
I.D. = 0.5
O.D. = 0.71

Chris Bayley:

L = 1.26
I.D. = 0.492
O.D. = 0.75

Many thanks, morning wood. This is very helpful.

Pastorals, do you play highlands?

Oleorezinator, I dabble with both UP’s and Highlands. I’m collecting measurements of UP chanter tenons for a quasi-academic comparison to pastoral chanter tenons.
