Changing fipples

Maybe it’s my imagination, but I’m convinced that putting an LBW fipple on a different whistle improves the sound of the whistle, but the same fipple doesn’t sound nearly as good on the original LBW to me. What’s the relationship between the whistle and fipple? I hear about changing fipples a lot, but the impression I get is the fipple itself is the key and the shaft of the whistles is neutral. Any thoughts?

Platonic, despite the evidence.

too controversial a topic…

It could change the tuning and acoustic properties to some small degree. I’m not familiar with LBW whistles though. Chances are that breath control and embouchure could make a bigger difference than the tube if the tubes are so close in size that the fipple fits both.

If a whistle body was constructed poorly (holes drilled incorrectly for proper tuning, etc.) then it would definitely make a difference to put the head joint (assuming it’s a well constructed fipple) on another body.

For the record, and I don’t care what anyone says, my current car whistle is a nickel Generation body with an Oak head. I like the whistle much better than I did with the Oak body… I think it has to do with the wall thickness.

Wall thickness might be a factor. The LBW is very light, while the other whistle is very thick. Neither compares to the thickness of the person holding them, though. BTW, I had no idea I was trolling controversial waters. My apologies. I suppose some topics are best not discussed in public.

Peace

This is the whistle forum. ALL topics are controversial. Some are more so than others depending on the phase of the moon and the mood of the members.

My apologies.

Not required.

I suppose some topics are best not discussed in public.

Luckily, the forum is not a public place. We sit in the privacy of our homes, wearing our pajamas or, uh, well…whatever and we hold forth. “Arguing with a C&F’er is like wrestling a pig in the mud - after a while, you realize the pig likes it.”

Seriously, whistles with swapped parts are sometimes refered to as “Frankenwhistles.” Search the forum and you’ll find some other threads on this topic. I periodically swap things around just out of curiosity but haven’t found a spectacular combination yet. I’ll try the LBW head on some other tubes. My LBW is buried somewhere and hasn’t been involved in any previous swap tests.

Mental images abound!

what is LBW???

I like the Walton sound and have put LBW and other Walton heads on a number of whistles. My best cheapie Eb is a Gen with a LBW head and my best cheapie C is again a Gen tube with a Walton C fipple.

LBW = Little Black Whistle (made by Waltons).
