About 3 or 4 years ago in Border’s books I ran across a paperback book. It was about the different songs and stories that kids teach each other: “Miss Mary Mack”, “Miss Suzie had a Steamboat”, ones like that from the school bus. It talked about how the information was transmitted across generations and regions of America, and the differences that developed during those transfers.
I’d really like to find that book. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

I know this is NOT the book you are looking for, but I have a copy of “The Worm Song and Other Tasty Tunes”, which has the words to a lot of the kids’ songs I learned in Girl Scouts, at camp, etc, etc. No history or anything remotely educational about it; but it’s a hoot to look through and remember all those old songs (and the words!). It’s by Janet and Cory Wilson, published by Scholastic in 1993.
