Celtic Tribute to Led Zepplin

While searching for whistle music to download to my phone (gotta love this century) I ran accross a cd titled “Celtic Tribute to Led Zepplin”. At first I figured it was a joke, but I just had to know. I previewed “Stairway to Heaven” and when the whistle came in and picked up the melody I knew I had to download this one. To tell the truth, its pretty good. Only problem is that the artist seems to feel that every Celtic insturment they can think of needs equal time on the song. The whistle part though was pretty good and really did sound like something Led Zep might try. So I was wondering…has anyone here tried Stairway on a whistle? I just might have to give this one a go.

Zepplin’s Stairway makes great use of the Recorder.

There was speculation here that Stairway was based
on an O’Carolan tune.

Millish recorded a tasty version of “Stairway to Heaven” playing the melody on fiddle, low whistle, and uilleann pipes. Unfortunately, it’s about the only thing from their album you cannot sample on-line, presumably for copyright reasons. (But check out “Hungry Man #1” at their myspace page to get an idea of the crazy places these guys can take traditional instruments.)

My wife got me that CD a couple weeks ago. “Stairway to Heaven” is OK; I thought the rest of the tunes were pretty strange. The group is called “The Boys from County Nashville” and the CD was produced in Los Angeles - an eclectic production if ever there was one.

I get a kick out of their chosen band name, because Nashville is a city in Davidson county.
Ah, but they’re not all from Davidson county, so that name wouldn’t quite fit.
The whistles used were a combination of Sindts and Humphreys, and ‘Going to California’ is my favorite track.
The CD is available on Rhapsody</A](http://www.rhapsody.com/ledzeppelinceltictribute/theceltictributetoledzeppelinlongagoandfaraway">Rhapsody</A)>, and you can listen to each track in its entirety with the 24 free trial plays even if you don’t subscribe.

So which of your whistles did they use. May as well take advantage of an opening to plug a product  .

Here, here, scott. There’s obviously a story here, raindog. Let’s hear it!

Sorry to disappoint, but I’m not sure which tracks featured which whistles.
Jeff (the accordion and whistle player) has several of my whistles in various models and keys.
I can tell you that there will be other ‘Celtic Tribute’ CDs by ‘The Boys From County Nashville’ in the near future, so be on the lookout for them if you enjoyed this one.
Now if only the world can accept the shocking revelation that something other than bluegrass or country music can come out of Tennessee!
