Celtic Flair CD?

At Goderich, Loretto Reid was passing out a list of the Somerset Entertainment CDs she and her husband have performed on. One in particular, Celtic Flair, she implied was nearly a Reid/Taheny Band album of tunes.

Unfortunately, Somerset Entertainment’s website doesn’t admit that this album even exists.

Has anyone out there heard this album? Does anyone know how to get a copy?

Thanks!

Celtic Flair is my single favorite whistle CD. I was astounded when I played it for the first time. I never expected to be so impressed with the whistle playing, as it wasn’t advertised as featuring a whistle at all. The guitar/mandolin solos, the bodhran work, all absolute top rate. Quality is as good as the best of the Chieftains or Bothy CDs. I bought it at the local Pharmacy CD Rack for $6.00 (Canadian funds, about US$ 4).
If I get a chance, I’ll look up the details tonight & post later. The tunes include Sporting Paddy, Eleanor PLunkett, Bridget O’Malley, Kid On The Mountain, Congress Reel, a fantastic version of Irish WasherWoman, …

Well, if it’s Loretto and Brian playing, it’s hardly surprising it’s absolutely top notch, is it?

Does your local Pharmacy still have it, do you think?

Brian is the best bouzouki player I’ve heard-at least playing plectrum style. He’s certainly among the top in the mando/banjo/bouzouki rankings. He really should make a CD of his own. That sounds like a good CD. I’ve never heard of it.

I bought the CD at “Big V” Pharmacy, a Windsor & London pharmacy chain, which has now been bought out by “Shoppers Drug Mart”. My recollection is I was so amazed at the whistle playing that I pulled the liner out to see who it was, but there were no notes at all. It was a generic Celtic CD. I’ve since been back to Shoppers but they rotate their small CD collection, and it wasn’t there about a month ago. Anyway, I’ll look it up at home tonight and post whatever info is available.

Brian’s also quite a fiddle player, too. Held his own quite nicely playing alongside Patrick Ourceau Sunday afternoon.

Ok Coloman,I’m breaking my word(wink)…I sat next to Brian at that great session Tuesday night and he was playing his usual wonderful and sexy mandolin…I quit playing at one point to listen…Then the infamous Keven Dooley came along…oh well. Did you also talk to Loretto about the latest Reflections CD?It’s all her, Brian,Ben G…She played me a couple of really laid back jazz celtic tracks from it.

Yeah, I think that’s the thing with Brian’s fiddle playing – his mandolin playing is so amazing you tend to forget he plays anything else.

Loretto mentioned the new CD, which I assume is #9not yet titled” on the list of CDs they’ve done with Somerset. I’m jealous that you’ve already heard some of it.

The only one of these CDs I’ve heard is A Celtic Christmas, which my aunt bought without any knowledge of who was playing on it. But Brian and Loretto are not the lead musicians on that one.

Really love the arrangement of the Dionne reel and Miss Cooper’s…they totally and completely kick…a lot of the Quebecois tunes work very well on whistle…

How neat to actually hear folks talk about somewhere I was!!!

I shall scrounge the drug stores for this. Thanks for the tip.

I am going to take a few lessons from Loretto this fall…really looking forward to it.

Janice, was the ‘infamous’ Kevin Dooley the large rather red faced fellow who was standing through that Tuesday session? What makes him ‘infamous’ if I may ask?

liz

Yes it was…apparently he’s one of those guys who’ve lived everywhere and everyone has a story about him(did you catch the looks on Brian and Sean Keene’s faces when Kevin D started to play “Maids of Mt Cisco”?) Don Kavanagh in particular had some interesting things to say…and Frank Edgley told a tale about the aforementioned Kevin that involved Worker’s Comp, disability payments and really rowdy ceili dancing.

and totally off topic Liz…I’m still feeling pudgy from a week of eating Norita and Mary’s yummy cooking for a week…It used to be that you could count on Goderich week to lose weight. Now you get all the fun and the weight to boot…

Loretto and Brian recorded the Dionne Reel!?!

Dang, the Reflections site listed above at least shows the CD, but it doesn’t seem to have a sales section. I wonder if these are the same CDs I’ve seen on sale at Freeway Fritz’s in Frankenmuth? Or the Sarnia Duty-Free shop? (Though I think I checked the later Monday.)

Colomon…if I find one shall I pick up an extra for you? I would be happy to so do.

Liz

Janice…I would think rowdy ceilidh dancing with one so big should be avoided…and speaking of ‘big’, I resisted the baked goodies for about three days, then I was hooked on the banana bread with ginger…

Please please please please please. I would be forever in your debt.

Coloman have you heard L&B play Dionne live, cause
I got my version of the Dionne reel and Miss Cooper’s from a tape I made of Loretto and Brian six years ago-she usually plays accordian on the set…I’ve also got a very nice version of the tune with Newfie whistler Jerry Sullivan and the now defunct Newfoundland band Tickle Harbor. Trade you session tapes!!!

Yeah, I’d agree about the ceili dancing…
