Hey, thanks!
Hopefully Netflix will have the subtitled version. Just finished “Kitchen Stories” and “Elling” and have discovered I have no ear for Norse languages, alas …
…
Oh, Elling’s great. It’s about two guys who are “mainstreamed” into an Oslo apartment after many years in a mental hospital. It sags a bit in places, but overall it’s just wonderful. Really refreshing look on friendship and life and reality and stuff. And niftily offbeat.
I loved Kitchen Stories, too! One of the better ones I’ve seen in a while.
I think I saw City of God, but – this is the problem I run into with Netflix – at three movies per week on average I start to forget what I’ve seen!
Eilam recommended a great one to me; “Japanese Story.” I actually wasn’t too crazy about it the first time thru, but the second time … this movie has just affected the heck out of me and I can’t forget it.
I’ll try to think about some of the others I’ve seen and report back. Oh, “Bread and Tulips” was good, and I fell in love with “Spirited Away” (if you like anime); “Shower” was OK – basically “Steel Magnolias” only with Chinese guys in a bathhouse. ![]()
For the last two weeks I’ve had an (I think) Israeli one about a brother and sister who share a pair of shoes, but have been so busy I haven’t had time to watch (work madness + spring on a farm, whoo-hoo).
Meanwhile, thanks for the tips. Maybe I’ll get to watch them in the next month or so ?
BTW, was “Leila” about the pregnant woman whose husband left her in an apartment with a filmmaker apartment-mate? That was a really good one.
