Killfenora. Aughrim Slopes (are there even recordings?). Some Tulla, I am told. After that Iâm guessing.
Do you mean older recordings, or new recordings of modern ceili bands?
The Kilfenora and Barefield CBs have recently released cds, I think. I donât have any actualy suggestions, 'cause I donât have any ceili band cds, but there has been an upsurge in interest in ceili bands lately (or there seems to have been), so it shoud be relatively easy to find good recordings, albeit newer ones.

Both old and ânewâ Kilfenora bands still have material available, the Tulla too, both old and new line ups, Ennis Ceiliband, Barefield maybe, Four Courts, Turloughmore . Older recordings of the Castle Ceiliband have superb stuff, The Bridge, The Tain with Catherine McEvoy etc Any amount of it.
Apart from the odd âBest of Irelandâ sampler, I only have 2 ceili CDs, namely âLive in Lisdoonvarnaâ by the Kilfenora and Tullaâs âA 50 Years Celebrationâ. In my opinion, the Kilfenora CD is much better recorded and the band plays tighter, but I like the Tulla better for its âswingâ and atmosphere (it contains a bit less accordion noises , too).
Maybe if you want to get a feel for how to play for the dancers, there is a series of four cassettes that have music for Clare and Kerry sets.
The music for the Clare sets is played by Eamonn McGivney on fiddle, Tommy McCarthy on cocnertina and Michael Tubridy on flute, in addition Junior Crehan plays on a few tracks for the Orange and Green set. Music for the Kerry sets are played by a group of musicians including Denis McMahon. Itâs all lovely stuff with great tunes in wonderful style. Claddagh has, as far as I know, just re-issued the material on CD.

I was referring to the first one, there were four tapes originally, which were ridiculously cheap [I paid 2.50 each some three years ago].
Apparently they have now re-issued one CD and the blurb says itâs the first of a proposed series. Claremen playing for the Clare sets [Eamonn McGivney is from Longford but an honorary Clareman] and Kerrymen playing for the Kerry sets. It seems though they have mixed in some material not from the original series which didnât include Breandan Begley and Johnny Leary who are listed for the CD.
Michael Tubridy on the original sleeve notes said it was the most enjoyable recording he ever worked on, which I thought was something the Chieftains could stick in their pocket.
Bloomfield: There is a ceili band called Shaskeen that has a number of recordings. Iâm not familiar overly familiar with their recorded tunes, but I have danced at a couple of ceilis that they were featured at, and the music was great.
