I have downloaded CD to WAV, MP3 Ripper and WAV to MP3 Encoder. I find these programs also have installed `Save’ which is adware and when I try to uninstall save I get a warning that the other programs may not work.
My question is: is this just a scare to keep me receiving unwanted ads.?

I don’t know about these programs in particular but I downloaded a game that installed a huge spyware program. I got rid of the spyware and the game would no longer run. I got rid of the game. It just shows you that there is no such thing as a free lunch. If you want a free program that has some real value download Spybot Search and Destroy. It will remove spyware that you are probably not aware is on your system.

You might try CDex. You used to be able to d/l it free (I got my copy in mid '01 v1.30) from download.com and there is no BS that comes with it. It may still be there. I tried several before I settled on this one. The rest all had really bad sound comparitively.

A good (free) firewall is also a nice way to make some of these ad programs innefective.
Anyway, some good and truly free audio programs:
CDex is all you need to rip, convert WAV to MP3, etc.
Audacity is for sound editing (simple or complex).
There are free programs and “free” programs. Stuff that’s hosted in SourceForge (like the 2 above) is basically safe. It’s called “open source” programs because the source code is available, making it basically very hard to sneak in something sneaky into the program.

I got tired of the wav2mp3 after a few days, you be alot better of with CDex.
