It won’t open. I press the button, it tries to come out, but it can’t make it. Any suggestions before I take the screwdrive and/or blowthorch to it?
The old ones had a pin hole you could stick a straight paper clip into to open the door. I see such a hole in the one at work here. You just push straight in and the door opens.

Actually, I’m pretty sure most every CD-ROM drive has those. My brand new DVD burner has one, as does my CD burner.
Geniuses! Thanks guys, after a few minutes of poking and prodding she gave in… my CD-ROM.
Be gentle when you poke her the first time.

Yes. Perhaps “poking” would be somewhat boorish at this stage.
I have been having a similar problem with the CDROM on my laptop; I now keep a paperclip taped to the back of it for when I need to open it..it’s just too derned expensive to get fixed, I might as well buy a new one as fix the old one…
Which, by the way, is exactly what I am planning on doing once I get paid for this car I fixed up for this kid I know. My laptop is going on two years old; it was a screamin’ ban’shee when I first bought it (the first of the 2.8Ghz line of AMDs) so it’s still competative now. The CD drive, however, is showing some whiskers (I’ve put it through a LOT of use, probably more than it’s makers were expecting, through my photography business) and needs replacing.
everyone’s got to learn somehow, usually starts with adolescent poking around…At least he’s at home where you can supervise his poking and make sure it’s safe, instead of learning on the street, what with all the viruses and worms out there. ![]()
Too true. But what’s an itch between friends? ![]()

Did you try removing the coffee cup…
