Carty, Tully, Hogan

Out December 1st

[Thanks to Seanie mentioning it elsewhere]

Veeerrryyy interesting (Xmas!!!). Thanks for the link and heads-up, Peter.

One puzzling thing about the cover images, though - that really doesn’t look like a Radcliff System flute depicted, nor any flute, indeed - more like a clarinet!

What a flub by Claddagh!!! It wouldn’t have been that hard for them to find a suitable image! Kinda spoils the kudos due for re-issuing the record.

A Radcliff looks like this:

There are also several Radcliffs in the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney with pictures accessible online, e.g. http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=130607 which has links in a side column to the others and many more interesting flutes…

Anyone know when this was recorded?

The notes on the original tape release said they recorded on and off for a few years, never quite happy with the result. Carty’s death put an end to that and they released the tracks they thought of as good enough. Stopping short of digging up the tape I would guess, 1985-ish. I bought it 1991-ish

Exceedingly good news, thanks Peter. Clarinets on the cover be damned, this is one of the loveliest recordings of Irish music you could find, and a great source of interesting (for flutes read difficult) and fine tunes and East Galway (of the iconic variety) repertoire. Can not recommend this one enough, and that comes from a huffy puffy Northern type of flute player.

Christmas has come early  Thanks for that news, Peter.

In fairness and as the small print said, it was Seanie who got it first in the other place.

The original tape release was quite short, it will be interesting to see if they maybe have included a few more tracks that didn’t make the original selection.

The original was also a bit muddy sound-wise, a good clean up would be great too.

Thanks for the news; this is one for the xmas list.

About time. I’d been talking to Sean Walsh over 3 years ago about what I might do to move this along to CD (and for any appropriate hiss removal/cleanup etc.). Glad to see it finally surface, by whatever route.
