Hi all.
back in August I ordered a low D starter set from a store that shall remain nameless. The set was going to be a Kerry Low D along with the low whistle book and 110 slow airs…all for $153…not a bad deal I thought
it was on backorder. repeated emails requesting updates have gone unanswered. I also just found out that Phil Hardy is no longer sending Kerry’s to this store.
I was hoping to have one in time to practice for Christmas. My mom is a church organist and I was hoping to play with her on some tunes.
Therefore, my search for a low D, and a retailer who has them in stock, has recommenced.
I prefer something with a bit more of a complex tone, instead of flutey. I want something with good volume and projection. I have an Alba low A and G and they are nice…I didn’t realize they were flutey in sound until I got them…but I got a good price so I’ll hang on to them. Any thoughts on an Alba low D?
I’m not interested in going Susato.
I listened to the Burke Viper sound clip on their site and it’s awesome. I like the Reyburns too, though not sure between the standard and wide bore. The wide bore sound clip had reverb on it and the standard bore clip didn’t so it’s hard to compare them.
I also listened to phil hardy play the chieftain tuneable low D and loved that.
I have heard Howards are recommended but I haven’t heard them. The overtons are more than I can afford.
From today’s research the Burke Viper is $220 (a little higher than I wanted to go)
The Reyburn is 200
and Lark in the Morning has the Chieftain for 209 (very tempting)
Or should I still with the Kerry low D and just find another supplier?
Tuning is important and good volume is an asset.
Thanks all for your input.
