Calman the Dove Transcription

Anyone out there willing to help me with timing for Davy Spillane’s whistle part to Savourna Stevenson’s lovely harp piece, Calman the Dove. Spillane plays the short part several times throughout the tune and then finishes differently which I’ve shown as a second time. I can’t work out the timing/bars etc because of the syncopation but I’m pretty sure its in 3/4 or 6/8 You can listen to it here on Spotify. MTGuru?

Sorry, listen to it where on Spotify? There doesn’t appear to be a link in your post …

My apologies. http://open.spotify.com/track/0kLiAFbskJuBBPhVpWbiwp.

Thanks. Sorry, but I haven’t got a Spotify account*. Not likely to get one, as it looks like you have to give them access to lots of things (Google accounts, Facebook, etc).

Maybe MTGuru has one. You never know.

  • I hadn’t realised that you need one to listen to a link like that.

How can I post an mp3 to the forum? Is there an easy way?

All I know is that if I had a pet dove, I wouldn’t name it Calman. Dexter, maybe. Or Dave - Dave the Dove has a nice ring. Definitely not Calman.

No, I don’t use Spotify either, because It sounds like a stain remover. But I think this is the same piece:

Thanks for finding it MTGuru. Yes, that is the piece. It finishes at about 4:33 in the video after several repeats of the whistle theme ending the last time with the second part of my transcription. I’m reasonably confident of the actual notes and ornaments just not the timing and splitting into bars.

I thought “calman” was the Gallic word for “roast” or “fricassee”…

Best wishes.

Steve

We’ve got a white dove that took up residence on our kitchen windowsill a few weeks ago. I think he must be a refugee from a wedding. I put seed out, and he spends his days mingling with the galahs, cockatoos and crested pigeons. He’s been busily courting all of them, to their bewilderment and our amusement. We couldn’t agree what to call him, so my daughter calls him Sam, my wife calls him Reg, and I call him Albus. He doesn’t seem to care one whit what we call him, as long as the seed keeps coming!

Cheers

I’ll bet! I have mourning doves all over my bird feeders, and they’re seed vacuums, hoovering up everything in sight. Heck of a bird as a symbol of peace. They’re very aggressive, constantly fighting with each other and bullying the other smaller birds - finches, grosbeaks, towhees. And they make a nice thud when they hit the windows trying to escape from our resident Cooper’s hawk.

I guess this doesn’t help Mike very much …
