I recently upgraded the SDRAM in my computer. It seems to work fine, and the computer “properties” screen indicates that the computer recognizes all the new memory. However, when I shut down, sometimes (about two out of three shutdowns, I think) I get an error message.
The title is:
lucalbackproxy
and the message is “This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down …”
When I click to clear the message, it comes up again, usually a total of three times, and then the computer shuts down normally. It starts up normally and functions normally after that.
Any idea what’s going on? (I Googled lucalbackproxy and got nothing.)
Never seen this before, but the backproxy error would make me guess that this has something to to
with your internet settings and is not related to your new memory.
First guess, are you running any web filters, to block web pages?
Second, have you installed any software
for anonymous web browsing?
If you discontect your PC from the internet and start windows and dont open a browser a few times, will this error still appear?
Long shot, download and install/reinstall Java Runtime Environment (JRE) some of the scripts, software that uses
local proxy, backproxy etc also need JRE.
Other then this I have no clue.
You can mail me the complete error message and I’ll see if I can find something out
(yes I know, I dont have a life).
I don’t have web filters or anonymous browsing software. I ran my spyware deleting programs, reinstalled IE and JRE to no effect. I did try shutting down and then not running IE during the next “on” period. I didn’t get the error messages when I shut down after that, but that isn’t definitive because I sometimes don’t get them even after I’ve run IE.
I’m using Win98SE and can’t find an event viewer. There’s no Administrative Tools option in the Control Panel. I did a Start-> Find->lucalbackproxy, but got no hits.
Start with PE and see if you can find a match. If not, use Autoruns to list each thing loaded on your system and start disabling them one at a time until the problem goes away.
Or just try disabling it altogether to see if the problem goes away; if so then you found the culprit. You can re-enable once you’ve narrowed it down that far.
For what it’s worth, on two separate occasions, with two separate computers, I’ve had Norton software end up being the cause of major problems. In both of my cases, the computers started running extremely slowly, the point of being unusable. Only when I sort of randomly uninstalled Norton did the problems go away.
That’s interesting. I’ve been wondering if Norton AntiVirus might be messing things up a little bit in the background. Is there another software that protects as well without causing problems?
I’ve been using this product for a year or so, on several machines, and have had no problems at all. It updates automatically and, to my knowledge, I’ve not had a virus.
I’ve replaced Norton AntiVirus with the free software you recommended, and I believe there’s an improvement in performance. Internet page loads seem faster, and the computer hasn’t hung up when I’m browsing online, which it had been doing frequently.
BTW, I mentioned that I had a problem with Norton AntiVirus to a local friend who used to have a computer business, and he said it’s especially troublesome with Windows 98. He told me there’s a free antivirus program he’s been using for a long time, and he would email me the name of it when he gets home. Then I checked this thread and saw that y’all are recommending a free antivirus program, so I called him and asked if it’s the one he uses. “That’s it!” he said.
