I know that there was a recent thread on the lower notes on the bass regulator jumping the octave but I have a problem sorta the opposite of that. The top note (C) on my tenor regulator wants to jump the octave (or just sound wonky) if there’s too much pressure. Every other note is very good tone- and pressure-wise, so I don’t want to open the reed any, if I can help it. Any ideas of a good fix for this? Thanks!
Might you have answered your own question when you say " if there’s too much pressure" ?
Really it is so difficult to analyse a single problem without all the information i.e. having the actual set in one’s paws… but so much can be blamed on the faults of a chanter reed… like too much operating pressure or too great a range of pressures needed to play all the chanter notes… not that I am saying you do not have the most wonderfull chanter reed and that it is the Tennor Regulator reed which is at fault or something wrong with the regulator like a leaking key pad or too much rush or too little key elevation or poorly made note hole or a leak at the reed seat or the reed blades touching the sides of the stock or the reed head leaking or its bridle is loose or it is scraped unevenly and the tips of the blades don’t bed together well or it is just not the good reed for that regulator… etc etc etc…
Perhaps there is a leak in the chanter head or a blockage in the bag neck which might cause you to need to blow the set too hard to overcome this…
Thanks, Geoff. I think I found the problem: apparently the bridle was moving around on the reed; I fixed it down by putting the red wax (used as cheese wrapping) at the bottom of the staple. This seems to be working.
