building a book shelf

Hello… my name is annie, and I’m a book-a-holic…

“Hi annie…”

sigh

I love books.
I love “Half-Price” Books…

I have a “Half-Price” book box. I go and buy up scads of dollar books, read them, put them in the box, and when it’s full, take them back. I know I don’t get much back, but I don’t feel quite so bad about having boxes of books in the basement that way.
But - I do have a LOT of books I can’t bear to part with. And when Tom and I got married, we had to go through the books and decide who’s copy of LOTR, etc. was going to be kept - we had so many duplicates!
The one thing I’m bad about it book jackets. I always take them off while I’m reading the book, and usually don’t put them back on. So I had a lot of very plain hard bound books!

The most “unusual” group of books I have is a complete set of World Book Encyclopedias from 1964 (it’s the oyster and dark green set) including the ChildCraft set - AND matching Yearbooks up until 1986 (when my dad died).

I love books, and as long as you have read all the ones you own (with a few you are working on) I don’t think there’s anything wrong with owning as many as you like. At least I hope not, because otherwise I’d have to part with several hundred of my best inanimate friends…

I used to have around 400 or 500 books, all of which I just slowly accumulated. I hardly ever buy a book new (they’re so expensive), so these were thrift shop, yard sale, and eBay finds. I’d read them all except for a few.

However, last month I gave about 100 to the library at school and I sold about 100 on eBay. I only have 250ish left, but I just need some place other than plastic boxes to keep them.

Thanks for all the ideas, everybody!

Cranberry: Lots of good “no tool” suggestions. You’re comment above is scarey. Be very careful with nail guns. They can be really helpful and efficient and really dangerous.

Maybe you should use a hammer if you build something. A nail gun sounds scary to me. Didn’t a construction worker recently get a nail shot clear into his head?

Go to the biggest library you can find and memorise all the books. That way you won’t need to store them.

I’m going to get milk crates (I discovered that they make metal ones, so I don’t have to worry about them collapsing so easily like the plastic ones, but they are still much lighter than cement blocks).

I’ve used a nail gun before (with staples in it, this one could shoot both), and I agree that they are very scarey things.
