Bridge at Killaloe

Does anyone know the lyrics to this song? I’ve searched the net extensively. but I can’t find it :astonished:

It is better known as “The Scariff Martyrs” but I cannot find any lyrics on the net.

Christy Moore has recorded it so you might have to buy the CD and learn the words from there.

I can’t think of the album title off hand but a quick Google will get you there.

Slan,
D.

Danke!

From the Christy Moore Songbook:-

The Scarriff Martyrs

The dreadful news through Ireland has spread from shore to shore,
For such a deed no living man has ever heard before.
The deeds of Cromwell in his time I’m sure no worse could do
Than those Black and Tans that murdered thise for youths in Killaloe

Three of the four were on the run and searched for all around
Until with this brave Egan from Williamstown was found
They asked him were the boys inside, to the rebels he proved true,
And because he would not sell the pass he was shot in Killaloe

On the fourth day of November, the day of sad renown
They were sold and traced through Galway to that house in Williamstown
They never got the fighting chance but were captured while asleep
And the way that they ill-treated them would cause your blood to creep

They shackled them both hands and feet with twines they could not break
And they bought them down to Killaloeby steamer on the lake
Without clergy, judge or jury on the brigde they shot them down
And their blood flowed on the Shannon convenient to the town

With three days of perseverance their bodies they let go
At 10.00 p.m. their funeral passed through Ogonolloe
They were kept in Scariff chapel for two nights and a day
Now in that place of rest they lie, kind people for them pray

If you were at their funeral it was an awful sight
To see the local clergy and they all dressed up in white
Such a sight of these four matyrs in one grave was never seen
For they died to save the flag of love, the orange white and green

Now that they are dead and gone. I hope in peace they’ll rest
Like all young Irish martyrs, forever amoung the blessed
The day will come when all will know who sold the lives away
Of young McMahon, Rodgers, brave Egan and Kildea
