bridge acoustics

While on vacation with my family, I was walking on the beach between Newport Beach and Huntington beach and saw the bridge over the Santa Ana river. I wondered what the sound would be like playing underneath the bridge and naturally had to find out.

Fortunately, I had my hybrid whistle in my pocket (Clare 2 piece body with Hoover whitecap mouthpiece). The sound was different than anywhere else I’ve played. I expected a big booming echo, but the sound was more of a fullness than an echo. Combined with the sound of the surf in the background, it made a very pleasant experience.

The only problem I had playing at the beach was from the wind. Unless I turned my back to the wind, the low notes made no sound. If I did turn, I couldn’t watch my daughter while she was wading in the water. Being a worrywort, I didn’t get to play much.

Wind can really interfere with the low notes. The one whistle I have that doesn’t seem to mind the wind is my Susato Dublin…another reason I’ve been using it for Morris (Santa Cruz being rather windy this time of year).
