I am brand new to ITM (I only know what this means by scanning the forums). I am going to order a Sweetone for my daughter for her birthday (and hide her recorder).
My son has been taking guitar for a few years, and is finishing up “The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method, Vol.1; The Art and Technique of the Classical Guitar”. He does very well, picks it up easily, and has a talent his instructor says. I would like to make ITM a family affair, and get him a good book so that the three of us could play together. Any suggestion? He has a basic classical guitar, and reads notes very well.
As for me, let’s just say my children will be teaching me!
You might want to look at the Dave Mallinson Session Tunes series. Each book has 100 tunes with guitar chords. You can also get a CD that has all the tunes from the book so you can hear what they are supposed to sound like. I think the best one for beginners might be: 100 Vital Irish Session Tunes. It has slides, marches and polkas which are a little easier than reels or jigs for starting out.
If your son wants to play rhythm guitar, there are alot of good books, but you can probably find some basic instructions on the web, just to get started.
For a classical guitar player, Mel Bay’s Celtic Encyclopedia: Fingerstyle Guitar Edition by Glenn Weiser has some nice, straightforward arrangements that aren’t too difficult.
Your family Ceili Band sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun.
