So… What should I do? I’m sitting in the school library wishing I had my pipes, and wondering why I don’t have an “at school” practice set.

If you don’t already have a collection of piping (and other Irish trad) recordings, start one, and listen listen listen! You will eventually need to figure out what kind of piper you’d like to be, and listening is the key to figuring this out…

What kind of piper I’d like to be???

And I’m on the wrong course? I’m graduating in December, and was required to take a class early friday morning and late friday after noon, but didn’t want to drive home.

I have a collection of pipe tunes, and I listen to them about 4 to 5 hours every day. No worries on that, I was more or less wondering what every one else was up to. And mebbe hoping a little that Uilliam might blast me a new one or something, cuz I haven’t had a good laugh in a while!

I spent about 40 hours this week on my pipes, and am very happy with the improvements that I’ve made, plus I picked up a new set on the whistle/flute (Tobin’s Favorite/Garret Barry’s). I have been working on triplets, getting a good tone, and trying to figure out my reed problems. Transferring all the tunes I know on whistle over to the pipes. Scales, Scales, Scales. Bellows and bag manipulation. Keeping a good tone. Open scales, closed scales. Don’t you guys worry about what I’ve been doing, I’ve been a busy bee! Anyone else wanna jump in?

I’ve been filling moments like that with digging in the online archives to learn about pipers like Tom Busby, Michael Carney… some of those pipers that are responsibile for keeping it alive here in the States in the early / mid 20th century. It’s amazing what you can find online!
