I’m building a set of border pipes, starting with the chanter if i can get it right, but i need to know some dimensions, mainly of the conical bore , the inside diameter at the top and inside diameter at bottom, and overall length. im sure they vary depending on the maker but im looking for a starting point. so if any one has a set or experience building them i would apreciate the as much knowledge as possible. thanks
or even any resourses on the web about this would be appreciated…
I’ve owned so-called “Border” chanters from Hamish Moore (reel), Nigel Richard (session) and Jon Swayne (Lowland). (The parenthetical name is what the makers called them.)
They’re all pretty much the same, in the key of A, about the same volume and tone.
The Moore and Garvie were closest in bore size, in fact the reeds could be swapped.
The Swayne has a bit smaller bore than the others.
I only own the Swayne now.
Anyhow on the Garvie Bagpipes (Nigel Richard) site he gives dimensions of various chanters and their pressure and volume.
