I think I’ll have to just roll over and die if the mass of powerful sound that Mr. Molloy produces out of his Eb flute comes from an anonymous small and sweet sounding German flute. The way he plays it is anything but small and sweet. I’d like to think it’s an Eb Boosey Pratten of which there are plenty.
I meself thing it’s very funny we can pretend to know what flute Matt Molloy was playing in the album, or in a session when we were not even in the same country. ![]()
For all i know, it was made in Mars or by Lectroids of the 10th Dimension.
But then, i’m not nearly as smart as most of you.
If you really want to know, ask the guy.
There is an interview with Matt Molloy here:
http://www.firescribble.net/flute/molloy.html
Where he talks about his flutes, including a bit about the E-flat flute, but unfortunately not enough to answer the specific question of what kind of flute it is.
If there’s a way to contact him I’d agree simply asking him is the best way to find out.

Yes, that’s a good interview. All of this is fascinating, but to go from there to having heated discussions about which flute he was playing in a specific session or album is a little bit of a jump, unless we were there. Not that it isn’t fun! ![]()
I’m sure there’s a way to contact him. Try his agent, or his son, or the famous pub, and so on. Kevin Krell must have some contact info.
The other side of the coin is that the kind of flute he plays is not so important. It’s good as a recommendation (any maker would like this kind of endorsement) and as an item of hero worship, but i’m sure Matt Molloy would sound just as huge on my $400 M&E flute.
Wow…that Pratten went for $5,167.77!!! Incredible.
Dave, think you could get $8k for yours? ![]()
Greg, i’ve got to admit…i’ve turned down $9k for it.
Not because it’s not worth that, but because I’m just not interested in selling it.
Now…the 8-key Rudall/Carte (#7007) that I’ve got, in original case with cocus grease pot and cocus cleaning rod…THAT i’m interested in selling.
