Hope somebody here can get it

Is a Boosey that kind of flute that needs to have some Guiness poured inside to play it’s best? Or is that a Boozey?

I wouldn’t know, Glauber

You should ask our resident flute expert, Mr. KIA (like the car…a monicker that shall stick, I imagine).
He knows everything!
(KIA=Know It All)

What a beautiful flute. Cocus?

Why is it, i wonder, that every time someone sells a flute on eBay he claims that he doesn’t know anything about flutes? CYA, probably.

I also wonder how many flute players and makers named Alan Ginsberg are out there. A good project for one of Dale’s post-modern sites.

Alan G is also selling a Rudall “bass flute” in Bb, that looks interesting.

With u-shaped metal headjoint.

with what looks to be a “siccama-type” right hand set up.
Interesting.
I’ve never played a curved head flute…bet it feels weird having your hands so much farther forward, no?
hmmm

Perhaps the Great KIA has the skinny! I’m sure he’ll let us know!

I’ve only played curved heads on real bass flutes (1 octave lower than normal flute). Somehow it doesn’t feel weird; it looks stranger than it feels. Supposedly the curved head spoils the intonation in the third octave (not that you’d know with a bass flute anyway, but something to worry about with a Bb flute or a modern alto flute in G).

But then again, if that’s a good flute, you can always have someone make a nice straight wooden head for it.

The keywork looks like nickel-silver.

It does.
But we’ll have to await a response from the Great KIA on that, too!
I’d not dare make a move without him!

Does anyone know whether this is a legitimate Boosey/Pratten flute?

It looks like it, but I can’t tell.

Thanks!

Aberystwyth is not very far from the centre of the universe .You should pop along and have a look !

That’s a tad pretentious and pompous, isn’t it?

Only if he knows that you are far from the center.

Denny

Only teasing. From the physical point of view we are strictly all at the centre of our own universe . And from other points of view too !. We mustn’t get too serious and censorious . Anyway I don’t really believe that Americans really exist . I suspect that they are made up by English newspapers looking for scandalous headlines about jackboot diplomacy . If they do exist , and are not merely an internet phenomenon , they have a wonderful gift for not seeing themselves as others see them .Very comforting , no doubt .
If I have actually met them in a distantly remembered youth I seem to remember them as rather nice people , when they stay at home or go on holiday .
Anyway the vendor charges for using a debit card .That is the fault of eBay rather than him I suppose , but it is rotten .
I don’t see why Alan Ginsburg should not be his brother .It isn’t much of a claim to make .
Should make a good old bit . Too much for me . Anyway I like silver keyed Prattens !
I hope that Larry Mallette gets it .

It looks legit to me too, but the usual eBay caveats apply. Email the seller, ask some questions, see what he says. Ask for a serial number, for example. Ask about cracks, etc. Check with dealers how much a flute like this is worth before you bid too much money for it. Only you know how much risk you can take.

I actually think the “bass flute” is very interesting too, maybe the more interesting of the two.

Dave,

is that stablizing post (or whatever you call the bit the keeps the long F in line) on the long F always that close to the F# tone hole (the tone hole for RH finger 1)? It looks like the post has nearly climbed into the tone hole.

Is your Boosey that way? Isn’t that hard to play with?

Eric

That’s a nice aesthetic catch, Eric. I didn’t notice it.
That’s not the “guide” for the long F, but appears to be the pillar for the hinge itself. Both my Pratten’s Perfected flutes are block mounted.
I’ve seen stabilizing pins (not posts) and such on Rudalls that were that close to the hole, but filed down flat.
I’m not sure this one troubles me (although it does seem right on the hole…I’d love to see it up close!). If it were Hole #5 (RH2) then yes, because that finger is longer for us all and most players don’t “crook” that finger. RH1, though, we usually keep at the pad.
Still…it’s a good question. Makes me wonder if it was a repair or reseating of the post? Not sure.
Close photos would be nice! Perhaps someone will ask the vendor for another shot?

dm

Dave,

thanks for the reply. As we both know, pictures don’t always truly show how things are, so it may be further away from the hole that it looks or angled in someway as not to be an issue.

I’m not bidding, so I’ll not ask for close ups or different angles but maybe someone else will. It’s still a nice looking flute and being sold my a flute maker (or his brother if I recall correctly) seems like a pretty safe bet.
