Greetings!
I have been the proud owner of a Clarke Original and a Tweaked Sweetone for all of about a month now. (Already I have learned that one is not enough, oh, I mean, I had to get a second one so my kid could play along
) Actually, it started so innocently, he, a charming lad of almost 7, asked for one and I, a devoted mother, decided not to wait until his birthday, rather to just saunter into our local, fabulous music store and buy him one. Well, you know the rest… I bring my whistle along everywhere I go and my son has to ask me if he can have a break from my playing! (But boy was he impressed when I started belting out his favorite tunes like Eliza Jane and Twinkle!) Now his teacher has asked me to look into whistles for all the kids, I’m thinking of going with Megs as they are reasonably priced and seem to get good reviews.
Anyway, I bought the Children’s Tinwhistle Method (MelBay) book and CD. But find the music on the CD isn’t, well, isn’t inspiring. It is cluttered with a bunch of other instruments which make it difficult for my son and I to really key into the whistle. And anyway, what I really want to play is Irish music. So, I’m wondering if y’all can offer some suggestions for a good book/cd or video that is geared toward a beginner and will help me learn to play some nice Irish tunes. The video by LE McCullough looks pretty good. As do a bunch of the book/cd combos on the market. Since I’m turning into a junkie, I have apparently lost my judgement and really just want to buy more and more whistles and books, I thought I’d look to some seasoned players for guidance!
By the way, the folks at Clarke’s were fabulous when I asked about the out-of-print “enchanted whistle” coloring and instruction book for kids. They searched the nooks and crannies and finally sent me the very last copy, for free. And it had my son playing his first songs in minutes! Too bad they discontinued it! (I have had to photocopy it for my son’s school.)
Anyway, thanks for your recommendations.
