I recall one of my elderly patients who came in with what was once a tattoo of a beautiful young woman on his arm. Problem was, as he aged and got wrinkled, so did she!
I must admit that I greatly admire the artwork on some of the work Iāve seen. I wish there was some sort of decoration that would last, say, 6 months and then fade away.
My dad had tats on both forearms (said it was the one and only time he got drunk while in the service). By the time I was born, all the color but the indigo had faded out (he didnāt take care of them), by the time he died, youād be hard pressed to even know what they were (eagle on one arm, rose on the other).
My son has made it almost 2 years in the Navy with no tats - his wife says he better NOT get one! Actually, after 13 years of allergy shots, I think heās seen enough of needles to last a lifetime.

I have a Sanskrit OM tatooed on my rt shoulder.
Got it in Katmandu many years ago.
It looks OK, very simple, but well, it means

If you take care of it (use sunscreen), it should still look pretty good. Of course it will change, but so does your body. Thatās kind of the point. A tattoo isnāt just a picture drawn on your skin; itās part of you and it will age with you and die with you.
Iāve got a big half-finished back piece of Hayagriva, one of the Tibetan Buddhist dharmapalas, or wrathful protector deities. Heās considered the wrathful manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Weāve been working on this thing for the last year and a half or so. Unfortunately I donāt have any current pictures, but hereās one from back when weād just finished up the outline (weāve since added quite a bit of shading and color):
Iāve also got a Green Man done in black and grey on my upper right arm. Alas, I donāt have any pix of him handy. Iāll take one tonight. Itās not a great tattoo, but itās a reminder of a really happy time in my life and Iām glad itās there. Itās about 17 years old and holding up pretty well.
What happens when the back-fur grows in again? Horses and other deities with hair growing out their nostrils just donāt have the same visual impact.

The same could be said of ordinary human beings, but we deal with it.
Thanks, yeah theyāre only in black. Iāve seen a lot of knotwork tattoos with bright vibrant colors and it just looks kinda cheezy to meā¦ just a matter of personal taste. Iāve also always had a thing for high contrast images (checkerboard patterns and such). I had originally planned to (and had already designed) quarter sleeves to go around those designs already there but then I got married and couldnāt justify spending all that money when I had a wife to support. I may get them one day, I may not, it is addicting though and Iāve been itching for a new one for a couple years.
