Blasted stubborn fingers!

I have a problem with my fingers not wanting to move independently of each other. I try to bend a finger and it’s neighbors want to come with it. This is becoming a major stumbling block toward developing any semblance of finger speed, not to mention that it makes playing anything with strings neigh on impossible. I believe that this is also the culprit that causes my hands to cramp up after playing for even a short period of time (flute or whistle in this case.)

First, is there anybody else out there with this problem so I don’t feel like a total freak? Second, does anyone know of any stretches or exercises than can correct this problem?

I play classical guitar and believe that most all independence issues originate with unwanted tension. When I first started playing (guitar) I would have sworn that it was physiolgically impossible for the fingers to be completely independent, but through time (and tears) my teacher has shown me that it is possible.
In fact, becoming aware of tension and learning to release as I play has become the cornerstone of my guitar (and now flute approach).
Try practicing slowly with awareness of your hand (and arm, shoulder, neck..they all work together) as you play. Don’t try to restrict any movement, this will likely cause more tension. Just relax and develop awareness.
I hope this helps.
