I’m looking for a whistle which will be in G and will be black. The purpose is the medieval-like playing and it’s necessary to
have non-aluminum instrument. I know susato and… is there any other option?
I’ve had a Dixon polymer G (black) and a Susato G (also black) for years. Very different voices. Both nice, in their own way.
The Dixon is a little more breathy, with cool sounding effects as you careen near the breath-breaking point. The Susato is a clearer, less breathy sound.
A reviol is aluminum, but is anodized in black so looks not much different than black plastic might (See third whistle from the left in my avatar. It’s a low F, but that whistle can use an E, F, or G body). Not to mention, it’s an amazing whistle. Actually, it might be more fitting because it would not appear as like plastic, but just as something with a black coating on it.
Another option for that purpose is to look at some of the many wooden whistles that are available (or a G flute).
Take your favorite aluminum whistle. Wrap it in a woodgrain pattern contact paper. Clear the holes as necessary. Then festoon the thing with ribbons, brightly colored cord and other sparkly bits. No one will notice, at least not enough to call the sheriff on you. Once done you can strip the whistle back to all of its original glory.
Otherwise, buy a Bleazey low G and don’t look back.
The MK pro low G hasn’t been released yet, has it? Am I missing something? We were just talking about this not long ago here on the forum, about other keys of MK that were supposed to be released already but so far have not been. It was said that the MK low G would be released quite some time ago, but it never happened, at least not that I’m aware of. I’d be pleased to be incorrect on this, but the MK website doesn’t have them up for sale. I got an email a long time ago from Misha about the MK low G, and said I’d be interested, but never heard any more on the subject after that.
The Burke composite is a good suggestion. Strangely, it seems Michael’s new website (which isn’t opening well on my computer) only shows composites available in D, B, and low G now. I hope it is just because of the site updating and isn’t because composites aren’t available in other keys now… Anyway, it’s available in G, and his whistes are very nice, if you like a purer sounding whistle.
Ah well, no you’re not. I was going by the “Key Info” section on the website. But you’re right, the low G is not (yet) listed as a “Shop Online” product. Sorry if I raised any hopes.
I believe Colin Goldie offered a black anodized low G. But apparently not at the moment:
“Please note that for the time being I cannot offer coloured anodised instruments. When I can again, there will be a seperate [sic] price listing of the keys that can be anodised and the colours available.”
FWIW, I’m very pleased with my Susato M-bore low G. In fact, it’s a favorite.
I ordered two Burke whistles back in March.. I wanted to get an Aluminum Low G and a Composite Pro Low D. I got the AL Low G with no issue. Here is the email I received from Mike about the composite.
Hi Eric,
I am writing to tell you that I ran into some difficulty finishing the low D Composite you ordered. I have worked at resolving it and tried two additional whistles but I am simply not satisfied with the quality of tone or playability I have been able to get.
I wonder if you would consider a low D Aluminum or Brass model instead?
The metal models are really good and I can get out either very quickly. Frankly, I have been phasing out composites and my stock has dwindled and may not be replenished.
Let me know.
All the best
Mike
BTW, I did go for the Viper (Very happy with it, but it requires some air).. But, that’s is beside the point. It looks like some of the composites may become discontinued in certain keys.. Back in march it sounded like he was going to scrap all composites.. (At least that’s what it seemed like in the email I got)..
Also, My AL Low G is great.. Intonation is superb.. As evidenced by Mikes email. He wont sell you piece of junk.. His attention detail is well worth the extra money in my opinion.
I knew I shouldn’t have waited to try the composite burkes . Seems he really favors aluminum. I asked him if he could do a low F in brass, or if he ever might in the future. The answer was basically “no”. And yes, his Viper low D’s are great. The brass one is one of my favourites. Luckily for the OP, the G is still available in the key he/she is after.
Can’t say I’d choose it over the Reviol, though, except when the honkin’ bottom D is more fitting for certain situations, which the reviol certainly lacks. That being said, Maurice makes the top low whistles I’ve ever played. I felt pretty alone in that opinion on here for awhile, but it seems since the tour a lot of other people are viewing his whistles quite favourably, as well. I’d recommend to the OP to at least consider it a bit. Maurice is always extremely prompt in replying with helpful answers if you write him with any questions. Of course, a whistle is a whistle, and any will probably do the job well enough.
Lulu- I’m curious, besides being plastic/black/non aluminum, what types of preferences do you have for playability, sound, etc.? There are quite a few options which fit the requirements you asked about in the original post, but it might help narrow down some better suggestions to know what your preferences are.
I’ve got a Dixon tuneable low G on order (I believe it is DX007). I don’t think you can beat the price for a whistle of this quality based on the research I have done.
