Willie Clancy used to play this air, which if I remember correctly he learned from some singer at a folk festival in Warsaw, of all places. Click here to hear it sung by Sheila Kay Adams, a singer from North Carolina, who also has a book at Amazon.com, huh. Powerful lungs. This is from the Digital Library of Appalachia, which has a good few recordings of Sheila, along with loads of other great music - couple handfuls of renditions of this tune, too.
That’s a treasure trove Kevin. I’m going to be late for work today! Thanks.
I think everyone in Ireland recorded this after Christy Moore released Live at the Point in 1994. His version has slightly different words.
Wasn’t this song penned by Hamish Imloch(sp?)? I used to perform this one with Mike Wallace… who played it in C minor, more fun on the fiddle than mere mortals ought to be allowed. ![]()
