So a few of my friends play Irish Traditionally accepted instruments (guitar, mandolin, fiddle and me on whistle and flute), so I put together a few tunes we could read down, about 9-10 and we played for about an hour tonight. It was quite good!! So, we decided to play at this creative arts forum that a friend of mine started at our neighboring sister university. Next Thursday, we should be playing for about 300 people, I hope it goes well. Any suggestions on how to mic everyone properly. I can hardly hear the mandolin player during practice, he thought a condensor mic would be sufficient. Anyway, just thought I’d let out the good news.
Any ideas for a band name?
Pluck Bow ‘n’ Blow.
It’s a big problem getting the mandolin heard in a non-amped session - my experience of trying to play mandolin is a session or group setting convinced me I could have played anything, and nobody would have heard a note. I have no idea what a condensor mike is. Guessing the mando player doesn’t have an electric mandolin…
Since none of the other instruments are amplified, condensor mics all around would likely sound great (assuming the mixing board supplies phantom power).
A buddy of mine likes to use Oktava MK012’s on acoustic guitar–I’d expect them to work well for your group. Plus, at $100 each, they’re a bargain!
