Beware of Scam buyers

Just a heads up. I’ve been approached by a potential buyer by the name of fredrick (sic) moore. Wanted to buy without seeing and offered me more than I was asking! Surprise surprise I had to provide my bank details. I didn’t get a response when I gave him a 2 word answer. So pipes are still up for sale

By approached, do you mean in person, or by telephone, or e-mail, or Chiffboard PM?

Also, what set of pipes? Thanks.

via private email for Preshaw 3/4 C set listed on this site. They are up here and on Uilleann Obsession

Thanks for the heads-up, GED.

I had a similar experience a few years ago. The scammer got my email address from an advert on uilleannobsession. The message I received was very generic, referring to “instrument” and not “pipes”. Pat D’Arcy got wind of it and promptly alerted everyone who had adverts on his site.

It’s good to know that the bush telegraph works with incidents like this.

I just Googled “Fredrick Moore scam” and you do get quite a lot of hits. All similar, interestingly. All either the basic overpayment scam or what I call the “Nigerian Prince” scam, or “419 scam” as it’s called. It looks to me as if that name is one which is used a fair bit.

Still, there could be a genuine Fredrick Moore out there who wants to buy some pipes … maybe he reads the forums here, and will put us right …

This thread brings to mind another thing i have been thinking about - some years ago at ESATO (a Sony Ericsson / cellphone forum)
we had a ‘trusted traders’ thread, where members verified other members as solid sellers/buyers, and every transaction was duly chalked up, like Mr_Blackwood: S:9,B:12 (S=sales, B=buys) and a short comment from seller/buyer. I don’t know if there’s a need for this here as the members i have traded with so far has been stellar guys, but for someone visiting the forums for the first time, it might be “sweaty” to make high$$ purchase from unknown people.
Just a thought.. (it worked pretty well over at ESATO)

Thanks, Ged. On the evidence, I’d say this qualifies as a genuine scam.

At the risk of being called naive what can a scammer do with your bank details?

Very interesting thread. Many of us are involved with buying, selling, and / or trading instruments within the C & F community. We all to varying degrees place our trust in each other as both buyers and sellers. I think we all exercise some scrutiny and caution with regard to a new member that has not contributed much to the content of threads and automarically is looking to sell an item.

I consider myself a relatively new member, but I have managed to contribute topics and replys to various threads and now have in excess of 200 posts along with some reviews of makers and their whistles. I have also made a fair number of purchases of used instruments on the exchange, and now have a verifiable history pertaining to such dealings. Like all who do so, I needed to establish my credibility with positive experiences in any dealings early in my purchase history. This does require that both seller and buyer come to an agreement and honor it accordingly. There is a certain trust factor that needs to be exercised by both a potential buyer and a seller, even more so in private purchases between individuals not imvolving established businesses. I have had people ship me instruments prior to receiving
my payment, I have sent others payment prior to receiving an instrument, and I have had
established makers send or make me instruments prior to receiving my payment. I have
also had dealings where the seller would not ship my purchase until they had my payment in
hand.

This is a great online community and one that encourages and fosters a cooperative spirit. I believe that the majority of members feel they can trust other members. I also believe that most members recognize the importance of honor among each other and go out of their way to maintain honesty in the conduction of business transactions. I did a transaction earlier today where both the seller and myself as the buyed both agreed to complete our respective ends of a transaction based soley on our word / promise to each other. I love doing business transactions this way and would not do anything to jeoparize the unspoken level of trust many members exhibit for each other. I hope that this process continues wthout any scams impacting C & F members and that folks continue to deal based on the “gold standard”, that being there own word / integrity.

Not much, until they hook up with someone else who has managed to steal your mother’s maiden name, your date of birth, and favourite shoe size. There are criminals who specialise in all these things and then trade further details to others who bring it all together.

Which, statistically speaking, is most often a half size smaller than your actual shoe size. :stuck_out_tongue:
