best way to store canetubes?

Ugh! Don’t talk about old Shelobs. :astonished:

A few questions from a struggling newbie:

  1. Doesn’t leaving the cane exposed to the natural humiditly of your environment affect its density? Or is the cane’s original density stay the same? e.g., If you bought crap cane to begin with, then it probably doesn’t matter how you store it?

  2. What is the fingernail test?

  3. What kind of cane do you recommend? What do you like?

Many thanks in advance . . .

On the outside of a tube of cane, you press your thumbnail/fingernail into the bark of the cane, if it leaves an impression that cane ought to be soft enough to use for chanter reeds. If it doesn’t leave an impression, that tube may be too hard.
