I’m travelling to Great Britain this summer.
Where can I find the best Irish/Scottish music in these cities? You can also rate the ales found in each pub but the music, especially whistle & flute music, is more important.
Did I really say that??..Is there something wrong with me?? I’ll check with my psychiatrist tomorrow.

for my corner of West London, I’m still trying to find good trad music pubs, but I can recommend two venues to get you started: The Hammersmith Irish Centre, just southwest of the station, which will carry details on other local London events nearer the time; they have ceilis or other musical events every Friday & Saturday night; and Captain Morgan’s (Pub), in Brentford, has a session starting 9:30pm every Thursday.
For north london try the Camden Irish centre Murrey st.
also get yourself up to Holloway Rd, there are still a few pubs around the area that have sessions especailly on a Sunday night…The Blackhorse on Wedmore St off Holloway Rd is good on A sunday night.
ANd sometimes the Auld Triangle on the corner of St Thomas’ Rd and Plimsoll Rd is sometimes good (nearest tube Finsbury Park)and maybe Clancys in Albany place off Hornsey Rd off Holloway RD Nearest Tube Holloway RD and lastly try The Stagg in Camden offf Camden High Street…either way you should get some info from these places…Good Luck
Do a search on the Internet for folk clubs in the towns you are interested in. They often meet in pubs, but the pubs themselves don’t advertise. It isn’t really a pub-sponsored activity, it just happens there. Just try that around here, if a whole bunch of instrument-packing Celtic musicians showed up and started to drown out the Sports Channel and the crap Muzak that assaults the ears in these places, they would probably call the cops!
I second Hammersmith Irish Centre on King Street, Hammersmith. It’s much better for ceili gigs than Camden IC - I saw Lunasa there a year or two ago, bloody incredible!
