best guaranteed-to-shed-a-tear solo-whistle Irish trad tune.

I never fail to get them weeping with “The Coulin”. Heck, I even get myself to weeping!
Tom Bingham

I like Magh Seola (The Boston Pops with Joanie Madden)

I’ll second J. Madden’s South Wind..it gets me every time.

“Coinnleach Glas an Fhomhair”, especially as sung by Maire Ni Bhraonain on Clannad’s Magical Ring CD. It’s not sad, but so beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes. I haven’t been able to make it sing on high or low whistle, but I’m getting closer with my M&E R&R flute.

For sad (but still beautiful), I’d nominate “The May Morning Dew”, especially as played by Larry Nugent on The Windy Gap CD.

-Bob

I’ll nominate Boolavogue it’s a beautiful waltz that I never get tired of playing.

I nominate “Bantry Girls’ Lament” and “Blind Mary,” found on adjacent pages in Tom Maquire’s An Irish Whistle Songbook. Both tunes are short, but follow each other well if played as a set.

Táimsa 'im Chodladh

Supprised no one’s mentioned this one yet…

Well, some of my nominations include “Johnny’s Tune” by Paddy Keenan (written for his father, Johnny Keenan (not for his recently departed brother, also named Johnny), “The Lament of the Three Marys” as played by uilleann piper Todd Denman on a lovely Bb set (this is on William Coulter’s “Celtic Requim” album and the only reason I even own that album), A tune written by former Battlefield Band fiddler John McCusker(it start’s with an “M”;I’ll remember it and post the name),“Lament for Frankie Kennedy” performed by Seamus Egan and Winifred Horan on the first Solas album (gotta love those low Bb pitched instruments! Seamus’s Bb flute will vibrate the bass speakers in your car), “Declan” composed by Donal Lunny and recorded on his live album. Yes, “An Feochain” as played by Eileen Ivers is also there along with Larry Nugent’s version of “Sean O Duibher a Gleanna” (Liam O Flynn’s version of that tune is beautiful as well as is Liam’s version of Phil Cunningham’s “Farewell to Govern”(the tune which inspired me to play the uilleann pipes). For that matter, ANY of Phil Cunningham’s slow airs!) Any of these as played by Seamus Egan: “When Juniper Sleeps” “The Days Last Light” “The Lark” and (traditional, this one) “Farwell to Glasgow” (possibly my very favorite air)and “The Dark Slender Boy”. Also, the Scot’s airs “Archibald MacDonald of Keppoch” and “The Dark Island” as played by Johnny Cunningham. And, maybe just to show a little ego, “Anna Cuin”, as played by myself on the flute(couldn’t resist).
Ah well, the great thing about this music is that there is no end of lovely tunes to be found and played!

Slan,
Zac

I stumbled on this by accident, as it was posted before I came to C&F. I thought I’d bump it to the top to get more suggestions…I’m bookmarking this thread.

The Level Plain (Magh Seola) as played by Joanie Madden

I also, have been watching this thread with interest. I have prepared a summary of what has been nominated up to this point. I will see how many of them I can find on JC’s ABC tune finder and create links to them. Any help with other sources would be great. Of course, some of them are copyrighted so we won’t be able to get them. Ultimately I’d like to get as many of the nominations together as possible and create a big ABC file.

I nominate Inisheer played on an Overton Low D.

I heard a wonderful version of Lady Athenry on the low whistle. nice and slow, was lovely, also Crested Hens is my other fav.

Timmy

“My Heart Will Go On” by just about anybody > >

I’m assuming this is a joke…Certainly not a traditional Irish tune by any stretch…I’m surprised Chris L. did not have something to say about it

An Leanbh Siog (The Fairy Child) is a lovely air. It’s on Sean Ryans’ ‘Take the Air’ album.

I played “I am asleep don’t wake me,” at funeral in Boston for a dear friend who died of pelvic cancer complications, that’s after surviving ovarian cancer five years ago, she was only fifty-three.

MarkB

PS I won’t play that tune any time soon for any reason.

There is this tune called “Baptism” on an Irish CD called “Lifescapes: Ireland” - that tune always makes me feel like I could cry. It’s a beautiful tune.

I’ve changed my opinion in the days since I first posted on this thread. Now it’s undoubtedly Amhran na Leabhair as sung by Emer Kenny.

My problem is I start blubbering
when I play these and can’t finish.
No one’s mentioned ‘Down by the
Sally Gardens’, so I will.

The single most depressing song (I
know this is different) is Karen
Casey’s rendition of ‘The Unquiet
Grave’ on Solas’ ‘Sunny Spells
and Scattered Showers.’
Also on the same CD, ‘Vanished Like
the Snow,’ by KC, too. (I finally
figured out that it is about Helen
of Troy, Heloise and Abelard, and
Joan of Arc, in that order.) Not
depressing, but I played it yesterday for
a friend who accounted for a box of kleenex.

Da Slockett Light. . .we play this for the passing of friends at City Steam.

vaporlock, you can find “Carolan’s farewell to music” at [url]http://www.thesession.org[url] .

Have a look around there, might find something else too.
